Jimmy Goddard climbing KiliOn the 16th June 2006, after 9 days of extreme effort, and recovering from mild hypothermia, Jimmy Goddard ascended higher under his own steam than any other paraplegic before him to reach Gilman's Point on the Kilimanjaro crater rim at a height of 5,650 metres.

In doing so he broke the world record, previously held by Bernard Goosen of South Africa.  He also raised over £8000 for various disability charities.

In August 2006, 2 months after Jimmy set the new record, the highly trained American and established paraplegic athlete, Darol Kubacz, attempted to beat Jimmy’s record.  He developed pulmonary edema at 5000m and had to give up the attempt at Kibo Hut.
